Milliways Dossier: Tavi

Threads: (x) (x)

History

  • Used to be part of a war; it's over now, but lasted a year - they were attacked
  • From 1014 Anno Regni
  • Will neither confirm nor deny that he's from an Earth - what? - he's from Carna, which all the extant races are aliens
  • For example, Alerans, which are humans, came from ancient Rome as centurions

Impressions

  • Threat Level: MEDIUM - Tavi's endless curiosity and intellect makes him a dangerous foe
  • Fought the vord - green wax and spider-like things maintaining it
  • "I've been serving on the front these last three years. I saw my first battle when I was younger than you"
  • Had no idea what a piano was, wow
  • Hasn't developed guns yet, but has obviously heard of them - likely from Milliways
  • His world uses swords and magic, interesting
  • Sacred right to obfuscate - wait, what?
  • People in his world with a certain amount of control over water can heal - interesting!
  • "I've always liked learning about other people's magic and technology, so it's the kind of thing I like to have a drink for"
  • Healing is a genetic ability, not everyone can learn it, and he mostly manipulates water in various ways, an inborn trait that manifests a bit later
  • Remembered my rapid-fire questions and answered them
  • "Not remembering things and not being aware of surroundings is a good way to get very dead, very quickly in my line of work"
  • Interested in bending
  • Calls his magic system furycrafting
  • His father and uncle served in the military
  • The military has a draft, but not everyone grows into the requirements at the same age
  • "But I rather expect the First Lord would consider it an egregious breach of duty to speak too freely without understanding" - interesting
  • Willing to share more should I provide evidence of my own character
  • "You're just not the only one with insatiable curiosity"
  • Late bloomer
  • Best friend named Max and another named Kitai - whom he loves
  • Was a soldier for three years on the front
  • Refuses to put "his people at risk," meaning he's in charge of a great deal
  • The greatest encouragement for the general population is that reliable and exemplary service or gets a much better retirement"
  • Steadholt - holding of land
  • "If women serve outright, it's usually as medics. If they aren't serving, though, there are always civilians around--and running better mess halls or taverns so we can eat decently, offering laundry so we don't have to do it, offering real, legitimate, hot baths..."
  • Loves Kitai - worships her, really - goodness - "she's always exploring", one of the smartest people he knows
  • Only with the Legion for a matter of weeks before the war started
  • Raised sheep in his childhood
  • Kitai - "We think in very different ways, and she really shouldn't try to think like me, but she knows how to pull me back or sneak around me when I'm being particularly stupid"
  • Took captaincy of a Legion three years ago - six thousand soldiers - and a few more allies
  • The war's over but there are still cities under siege - the Vord queen is dead, but there are still a lot of ground troops left
  • Marat, which Kitai is a part of - "Ah--they look almost human. Very pale, white hair, eyes shaped different from Aleran, nomadic, currency of obsidian arrowheads, bond of some kind to totem animals, tribes organized along lines of which animal they're bonded to. Different dialects based on which tribe; they've taken to using Aleran as a common tongue, lately"
  • Still has De Bello Gallico as a classic in history class - based on the war of Julius Caesar, whom they know as Gaius Julius
  • Icemen up north - keep destroying the Icewall, the northern Aleran defense - has an uneasy truce with them because Kitai talked to the ambassador on Tavi's behalf six months ago
  • Canim - nine-foot upright wolves carrying weapons and armor who appreciate audacity
  • Ludus - the Aleran equivalent of chess, Tavi played it with Vorg, the Canim ambassador
  • Children of the Sun - unknown, may have escaped into the Feverthorn forest
  • Canim truce started a year ago because Tavi knows the ambassador - offered them a home after the Vord destroyed their ranges in Canea
  • "The Aleran Vord Queen was the original woken about nine years ago; there were only two surviving daughter queens--both incapable of producing more queens, thankfully--in Canea a year ago. One of those is dead"
  • "The short version is that for political reasons, a High Lord and Lady offered Calderon Valley to the Marat in exchange for them invading it in united force--the clans don't usually ally like that. One of the Clan heads changed his mind, led his half against the other, challenged the leader, won, and became the new overall leader of the clans"
  • Doroga, the leader of the clans, is Kitai's father
  • Tavi saved Kitai's life by giving her an antidote for Vord bites - Doroga likes him now because he risked his life for her
  • Tavi's rubbing elbows with a lot of world leaders - why?
  • "I was still just a shepherd when I met Doroga and Kitai, and two years later--about your age, or slightly younger--a page when I met the Canim ambassador by holding a knife to his throat"
  • Gadara - a term used by the Canim to denote a trusted and honored enemy, better than friend
  • Tavi killed the Vord queen in a battle with a sword with the help of Kitai - awfully reluctant to talk about the Vord war
  • Built trebuchets without furycrafting just to see if he could
  • How to build a trebuchet with furycrafting: "Use it to cut the wood more quickly, and strengthen the wood against forces in ways that, without it, would make it break. Artificial, really, and dangerous because it leaves too much open to being overlooked. Any metal that needed to be in it strengthened"
  • Max and the upper families have all six kinds of furycrafting
  • Six kinds: Water, fire, wind, metal, wood, earth
  • Windcrafting: Air can be bent to make a telescope lens, fly, sound barriers, breezes, weather
  • Firecrafting: swords of fire, iceboxes because you can take heat out of things and enchant stones - what about freezing people?
  • "Come into your furies"
  • Every Aleran is born with at least one type of furycrafting, two or three at the most usually, and the third isn't as powerful
  • The Marat don't have any equivalent to furycrafting; the Canim have blood rituals
  • Power in furycrafting determines rank
  • Learned dancing at the Academy for about a year, didn't like it, was dragged to things by Kitai

Weaknesses

  • Standard squishy human? Possibly
  • Kitai

Scabs

  • Is he from an Earth? Why doesn't he confirm that he's not from one? - No, he's from Carna - see above
  • Was his war a civil war? Not this time - it was against the Vord
  • How much of his world is he in charge of, really?
  • What was the Vord war like?
  • How many types of furycrafting does he have?

Opportunities

  • He can absolutely teach me more about furycrafting, and possibly soldiering itself
