Notes on the Chemistry of Love
Note I: "The human body releases the cocktail of love rapture only when certain conditions are met and ... men more readily produce it than women, because of their more visual nature." -Helen Fisher, anthropologist and love researcher from Rutgers University
Note II: According to Ted Huston at the University of Texas, the speed at which courtship progresses often determines the ultimate success of the relationship. What they found was that the longer the courtship, the stronger the long-term relationship.
Chemicals Produced in the Name of Love
Dopamine (dihydroxyphenethylamine) - a chemical released in the brain based on reward behaviors and motivation, or addictive drugs. It affects mood, hand-eye coordination, and attention--among other things, including mate selection
Endorphins - happy-making chemicals released by dopamine. acts as natural pain killers and promote a general sense of well-being. involved with attachment
Phenylethylamine (PEA) - responsible for making you fall in love by triggering everything else, primarily dopamine, in a chain reaction. elevates mood and produces energy. also found in chocolate.
Norepinephrine - makes your heart pound and your palms sweat; together with dopamine, produces elation, intense energy, sleeplessness, craving, loss of appetite and focused attention
Oxytocin - the 'cuddle hormone', released in both genders via touching. released during love-making in order to foster emotional bonds with one's partner
Testosterone - produced in men and women and associated with lust
Serotonin - people in love tend to have lower levels, which causes you to obsess over your intended mate
Vasopressin - causes passionate love to fade as attachment grows
