OOM: Sleep

Autor can't sleep.

It's not for lack of trying; he simply can't. The nightmares that plague him as soon as he closes his eyes are too much. He finds that he has better luck on the floor rather than in the bed, which is why he gets rid of it as soon as he can. But by the second day of staying awake playing solitaire, he's drowsy and cranky.

By the fourth day, he begins to hallucinate. Bugs crawl at the corners of his vision. A shape moves just out of the range of his sight, driving him to distraction. Autor screams at it, frustrated and paranoid.

He crawls under his blankets and buries his face in his pillow, willing himself to sleep. The boy dozes fitfully, until Abendroth with his caved-in head visits Autor in his nightmares, jolting him awake. He's always running from something in them, stopping only to fire his gun or hit the duckboards from a shell. He's sure he's died hundreds of times.

Etude curls up on his chest sometimes, and Autor gratefully strokes the cat, centering himself. He seeks the animal out more often than not, holding him to try and center himself.

Finally, he decides to try interaction with others--since even the idea sounds exhausting, maybe it will give him the push he needs to truly sleep.
