Unofficial OOC Milliways Holidays List

This is by no means an official list; just because a holiday is not on it doesn't mean that it can't be celebrated.

Conversations with Dead People - Occurring in late October, this holiday involves pups talking with dead people from their past, present, or future. The conversation generally takes place during a dream and lasts one night only. There is a tag.

IMDb Flu - Usually occurring in winter-to-spring flu season, IMDb flu usually lasts for one week--sonetimes longer--and involves an illness where pups think they're someone else from their PB or voice actor. Here's a more in-depth explanation.

May the Fourth - Also known as Star Wars day, this holiday has generally involved play lightsabers, speeders, and special guest appearances by TFA-era Anakin and R2D2. Run by Lee. Here's the archives for May 25th, 2017, where Star Wars day was held for the 40th anniversary of the canon.

Summer Fair - Run by Bonnie, the summer fair involves a fruit and vegetable contest, stalls--like Emcee's kissing booth--and games, like tug-of-war. Here is 2017's version, the third annual summer fair.

Talk Like a Pirate Day - Occurring on September 19th, this holiday is just as it says on the tin: pups talk like pirates.

Cubefall - Occurring sometime in June, Cubefall is a week-long Cybertronian celebration run by Cam, which involves an at-will transformation for three days into either something cute, a robot, or at least one other option, usually a genderbend. The bar breaks out into K'nex and Lego pieces, and the fireplace is replaced with a furnace. Anyone who burns something in the furnace is said to have good luck. The furnace also changes items into other things. Here is the tag. Ellen Park is usually nominated to explain Cubefall to the patrons, and usually gets Ghengis Khan as one of her choices.

Halloween - Occurring on October 31st, this holiday involves Bar-picked costume changes and spooky movies being played on the televisions. Here is the tag.

Mardi gras - Also known as Fat Tuesday, this holiday is a celebration of life commemorated by Bar-picked costume changes and a party in New Orleans run by Yrael. Here is 2018's party.

AU Week - Occurring sometime in August, this plot involves taking the same characters and placing them in an Alternate Universe. For those who choose to play, the alternative universe is the way it has always been for that character. Remembering what happens after is entirely discretionary. Here is a more in-depth explanation.

Unofficial Milliways Holidays List

This list is wholly unofficial; any holiday can be celebrated by anyone regardless of whether it is on the list or not.

Mardi Gras - Also known as Fat Tuesday on most Earths, this is a celebration of life found worldwide, but primarily in New Orleans, Louisiana. Commemorated in the bar by Yrael, sometimes includes costume changes.

April Fool's day - Occuring on April 1st, this holiday is filled with pranks.

Cubefall - A Cybertronian celebration, Cubefall includes by-choice transformations for three days and occurs in May or June.

Halloween - Includes Bar-driven costume changes for one evening on October 31st.

Remembrance Day - The celebration of the end of World War I on some Earths, occurring November 11th.

Thanksgiving - A time of feasting in America, occurring in late November on a Thursday.

Christmas - Occuring December 25th, this holiday involves gift giving and egg nog.

Winter Solstice - Occurring December 21st, this holiday involves gift giving, clearing the air with people who you've argued with, and staying up until sunrise. On occasion, there is a Yule-goat-related bonfire.

Lunar New Year - Occurring in February, this holiday involves fireworks and giving money to children in fancy envelopes.

American Independence day - Also known as Steve Roger's birthday, this holiday occurs on July 4th and usually involves fireworks.

New Year's Eve/Day - Often celebrated by Emcee with a bar-wide party, New Year's Eve is the last day of the year, falling on December 31st on most Earth calendars. The new year celebrations involve music, dancing, and a countdown to midnight.

Towel Day - A strange holiday falling on May 25th where everyone in the bar is encouraged to bring a towel around with them.

Birthdays of Ada Lovelace (December 10) and Charles Babbage (December 26) - These holidays are celebrated by Enzo as his own version of the holiday season. They are holidays to celebrate the forefather/mother of computing. Babbage's birthday is celebrated with music, as that would really annoy him.

La FĂȘte nationale - Commonly called Bastille Day in English-speaking countries, this French holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille, on July 14, 1789. Celebrated in bar with cakes and banners.

12th Perigee's Eve - Celebrated by the trolls, this Alternian holiday occurs sometime in December and involves decorating a "behemoth leaving."

Azerothean Holidays

New Year's - pretty much just like Earth, but more fireworks

Lunar Festival (lines up with Chinese New Year) - a night elf and tauren druidic holiday that honors the elders that fought off the first invasion of the Burning Legion ten thousand years ago. Involves fireworks, special foods, and visiting the spirits of the ancestors to show that they are still remembered. (And also returning a crazed Wild God to rest for another year.)

Love is in the Air (Valentine's Day)- a goblin holiday created purely to make money. A plague of perfume encourages gift giving among the populations of the capital cities and the goblins are happy to sell chocolates and trinkets.

Noblegarden (Easter) - an Alliance holiday (now adopted by the Horde as well) celebrating new life and friendship. Traditional for nobles and lords to hide coins, candy, and treasures in colorful eggs for citizens to find.

Children's Week (Children's Day, Japan, usually first week in May) - A week taken by the champions of Azeroth to spend time with orphans, spoiling them and fulfilling their wishes.

Midsummer Fire Festival (northern summer solstice til US Independence Day) - bonfires are lit across the land and guardians appointed to watch over them. Meant to raise spirits and ward off ancient evils. Ends with a grand firework show on the 4th (technically the Engineer's Explosive Extravaganza, an Undermine goblin holiday)

Pirate's Day (Sept 19th) - including this more for completionist sake. A 'holiday' imposed by Dread Captain DeMeza taking over the port town of Booty Bay where all are welcome to join her crew for the day

Brewfest (Oktoberfest, last two weeks in Sept-1st week in Oct) - originally a dwarven holiday, any race that makes ale, mead, or beer is welcome to participate in the annual competition for who makes the best brew

Harvest Festival (last week in Sept) - a grand buffet in honor of the fallen heroes of the Horde and Alliance (also celebrates the first closed beta; in EU realms Peon Day celebrates this)

Hallow's End (Halloween) - a complicated holiday. Was once celebrated by the kingdom of Lordaeron as a time when the veil between the living and dead was thin and a giant wickerman was erected that anyone could toss a burning branch into, symbolizing burning away anything that would be unwanted in the long, cold winter months (fears, sorrows, old loves, grudges, etc). When Lordaeron fell the rest of the Alliance continued the tradition, not quite understanding its meaning (adding in costumes and candy buckets). When Gilneas rejoined the Alliance, the original meaning returned with them.
The Horde celebrates this for an entirely different reason. Hallow's End commemorates when the Forsaken broke free of the Lich King's control and regained their free will. Their wickerman is an effigy of the Lich King.

Day of the Dead (Day of the Dead, Nov. 1st) - the day when the veil is thinnest. Spirits of the dead may speak when graveyards are visited and bread and orange marigolds are offered.

Pilgrim's Bounty (American Thanksgiving) - Reflect, give thanks, share a ton of food.

Feast of Winter Veil (Christmas) - a holiday celebrating the myth of Greatfather Winter traveling the world and blanketing it in snow, thus preparing it for rebirth and renewal. The dwarves (and thus Alliance) focus on the figure of Winter, seeing him as a Titan ancestor. The tauren (and Horde) focus more on the Veil aspect, renewal and rebirth. Goblins now take advantage of both versions to peddle gifts and treats, including paying an orc and dwarf to dress up as Greatfather Winter.
